It is reported that the government is preparing to remove the obstacles in the current constitution in order to call a presidential election for a successor president. Political sources say that after the amendment is passed, the current president will be able to call a presidential election soon.
According to the current laws, a president who is elected by public vote can call a presidential election after completing four years of his term, but a successor president does not have the same legal permission.
Political sources say that the constitutional amendment that will enable Ranil Wickramasinghe to call the presidential election in four years, which will complete the remainder of Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s term, will be supported by the opposition.
