The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has indicated that Sri Lanka’s external debt burden has increased in 2024 compared to 2023. In 2023, the country’s external debt burden was US$ 63.4 billion.
However, in 2024, Sri Lanka’s external debt burden has increased by US$ 5 billion or about US$ 500 million to US$ 68 billion.
The Central Bank further states that the external debt burden has increased due to the increase in foreign loans and obligations provided to Sri Lanka by the International Monetary Fund, the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank.
