Internal sources in the party say that the United National Party and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya have reached an agreement to jointly establish power with other opposition parties in the local government authorities where the opposition groups won the majority of the power in the 2025 local government elections.
Representatives of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the United National Party have been involved in the discussion and the General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, and the General Secretary of the United National Party, Attorney-at-Law Thalatha Athukorala, have issued a joint statement regarding the relevant decision.
This decision was taken at a special discussion held today (19) regarding the establishment of power in the local government authorities where the people of the country have given the majority of the power to the opposition in the 2025 local government elections.
