Sathees Thamalini, who was working as the Assistant Divisional Secretary of Chavakachcheri, has died after suffering serious burn injuries in a fire that broke out at her house. The woman, a resident of Nirveli, also has a six-year-old daughter, police say.
Doctors at Chavakachcheri Hospital said that the deceased woman was six months pregnant. They also said that efforts to save the mother and child were unsuccessful. The statement made by the deceased woman’s husband, a Grama Niladhari of the area, to the police states that her dress caught fire while his wife was going to light a candle.
However, the cause of the woman’s death has not been revealed yet, and it is not yet known whether it was a suicide or an accident, and the police say that a formal investigation into the incident is being conducted.
Police also say that a further statement is to be recorded from the woman’s husband regarding her death.
