The Sigiriya stone steps are being worn away rapidly, says Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Minister of Buddhism, Religious Affairs and Cultural Affairs. The Minister said that the large number of tourists is the reason for this. He further said that the Department of Archaeology has been informed to determine how long the stone steps can be used. He made this statement at a media briefing held by the Government Information Department.
He also said that attention has been paid to removing the stone steps of Sigiriya and replacing them with granite steps or installing an iron staircase above the stone steps.
It is reported that about sixty percent of the tourists who come to the country come to visit Sigiriya.
