Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa met a delegation of the US Congressional Democratic Alliance in Parliament today. The meeting was also attended by US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chang.
The Opposition Leader highlighted the crucial role of the US in the country’s economy, noting that nearly 24 percent of the country’s total exports go to the US.
He told US businessmen that around 63 percent of Sri Lanka’s garment exports are shipped to the US, generating 400,000 direct jobs and supporting the livelihoods of over a million people.
While welcoming recent tariff cuts, such as the reduction of tariffs from 44 percent to 30 percent and from 30 percent to 20 percent, the Opposition Leader has also made it clear to the US delegation that further tariff concessions are essential to overcome Sri Lanka’s current financial crisis.
