The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the court that the Attorney General has instructed that no criminal offense has been uncovered in the investigations conducted in relation to the reduction of sugar tax from Rs. 50 to 25 cents since October 13, 2020.
A complaint had been filed regarding this incident to ascertain whether the government had suffered any loss due to the decision.
Following the filing of the complaint, the Criminal Investigation Department conducted the relevant investigations and forwarded all the information to the Attorney General’s Department.
After studying the information, the Attorney General informed the CID that no criminal offense would arise from this investigation.
Accordingly, Colombo Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera granted permission to conclude the investigation into this incident and the case was also closed.
However, the Magistrate stated that if any corruption or bribery is revealed in the future in this incident, the case file could be referred to the relevant institutions for further investigation.
