The government has taken measures to issue a gazette notification granting the authority to recall disbanded local government bodies to the Minister of Local Government.
In case the extended term of the local government bodies, as stipulated in the gazette notification issued on 27.06.2023, has exceeded, the responsible minister has the power to reconvene these local government bodies for an additional period.
Consequently, it will be possible to reconvene the dissolved local government bodies. If the said bodies have already announced an election, and circumstances arise where the scheduled poll cannot take place due to a crisis situation in the country, this gazette notification allows for the recall of the local government bodies. The power of convening has been granted to the Minister.
This amended provision has been introduced as section 2 (c) in the Municipal Council Act of 1987.
