Former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake says that measures are being taken to restart the cultivation of katupol, which was banned during the time of former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. He said this after a discussion with the katupol growers.
The former minister joined an observation tour of Matugama Baduraliya area to discuss the problems faced by the farmers who grow Katupol. It was organized by Harita Derana Small and Medium Planters Association. There, the farmers pointed out that a large number of families are facing many economic problems due to the ban on coconut cultivation.
They requested the former minister to re-establish this plantation which can be developed as an export crop. The farmers also pointed out that the country can earn more foreign exchange than rubber if they are allowed to cultivate it on their own lands as well as on government lands. Farmers also pointed out that they can earn a net income of 75000 rupees per month by growing coconut in one acre. They say that the cultivation of this crop has been banned due to the mistakes of some people.
Speaking here, former minister Ravi Karunanayake said that by removing the existing misconceptions in this regard, they will consult with people who have expert knowledge about coconut cultivation and give permission for re-cultivation.
He also said that after discussing this with the President, arrangements will be made to remove the existing ban by next January.
