A massive demonstration was organized in pettah against the decline in interest rates of the Employees’ Provident Fund due to local debt restructuring.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had also issued an injunction against this protest, which was joined by employees of many institutions, including the Colombo Dockyard and Free Trade Zones. The agitators were also prohibited from entering the Presidential Secretariat, the Presidential house, the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank, the Police Headquarters, Olket Mawatha from Fort Railway Station to the CTO Junction, and members of the trade union from 9 am to 6 pm.
High-pressure water bowsers were brought in to quell the protest, but the protesters dispersed amid the torrential rain.
