Proposal to abolish the executive presidency to be tabled in Parliament

Political sources say that the government is preparing to abolish the executive presidency.

The current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced before the presidential election that he would abolish the executive presidency and introduce a new constitution. However, so far, no appointment of a constitutional drafting committee or any preliminary work related to it has been done.

Under such circumstances, it is reported that the President is preparing to present a proposal to abolish the executive presidency.

However, if the government does not abolish the executive presidency, the opposition has already decided to present the proposal to Parliament as a private member’s motion.
