A special police team operating under the direct supervision of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Inspector General of Police tracked down Sewwandi and arrested her in Nepal, Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler told the media.
Police investigations have revealed that Ishara Sewwandi, the main suspect in the Ganemulla Sanjeewa murder, fled to India by boat from Jaffna, stayed there for three weeks, and then traveled to Nepal by land, spending nearly Rs. 6.5 million for the purpose.
Investigations have revealed that a person named J.K. Bai helped Sewwandi flee the country. She reached Nepal by traveling from India by bus and train. Police say she was arrested on Monday while hiding on the top floor of a high-rise building in a mountainous area of Nepal.
Four others, including another woman, three close friends of Kehelbaddara Padme and a Tamil national who had provided shelter to her, were also arrested during the operation. The suspects are expected to be brought back to Sri Lanka in the next few days.
