On 31.12.2023, a police sergeant attached to the Colombo Crimes Division was killed in a shooting incident in front of a hotel in the Weligama area by a group of officers of the Colombo Crimes Division and officers attached to the Weligama Police Station.
The Colombo Crimes Division officers were sent to this location illegally, and accordingly, the Honorable Court has ordered the arrest of 08 officers including the officers who arrived at the location on that day and the then Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and naming them as suspects in this case.
The Criminal Investigation Department is scheduled to conduct further investigations in accordance with that order.
The verdict of the Magistrate’s Inquest held in this regard was delivered at the Matara Magistrate’s Court on 27.02.2025, where it was stated that the shooting carried out by the officers of the Weligama Police Station was a shooting carried out based on the right to personal protection, and accordingly, no legal action was taken against them.
