Fort Magistrate Isuru Netthikumara ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to arrest a person who allegedly insulted and threatened a former Navy Commander while impersonating someone else and produce him in court, in accordance with the powers of the police.
The Magistrate made this order after considering a request made by the Criminal Investigation Department to submit a further report.
The suspect was notified several times to come to record a statement in connection with an investigation into such insulting and threatening behavior, but since he did not appear, the court was requested to issue him a notice.
Pointing out that the police have the powers under the Police Ordinance to take action against a suspect who has committed a criminal offense, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be arrested and produced in court.
Accordingly, the Magistrate said that it was not necessary to issue a notice and ordered the police to arrest the suspect and produce him before the court using the powers granted to him under Section 109.
The Criminal Investigation Department requested the issuance of such a notice in relation to a person named Hathmuni Ganganath Priyadarshana de Silva, a resident of Kaduwela.
