One out of every twelve people in Sri Lanka is a public servant

Minister Ramesh Pathirana said that the number of government employees has become an unbearable problem for the government, and in the future, no new recruitments will be made for any job except for the most essential areas of government service.

“There are 15 lakh government employees. The population of the country is 21 million. There is a government employee for approximately 12 of the population. It is one of the highest ratio of public servants in the world. So we all carry a huge national burden and can’t do it anymore.” The minister said.
