According to a study conducted by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO), it has been confirmed that nearly one-fifth of Sri Lanka’s total land area is at risk of landslides.
According to the study, about 13,000 square kilometers in the areas of Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Matale, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Hambantota have been identified as vulnerable to landslides.
The survey found that the frequency of landslides has increased, the main reasons being unplanned land use and unplanned cultivation, ever-increasing non-engineering constructions, blockage of water streems, construction in protected areas with water sources, deforestation and human interference. Confirmed.
