It is reported that the Supreme Court has given permission to hear a basic human rights petition filed against the removal of Ranil Wickramasinghe from that position by the then President Maithripala Sirisena in 2018.
In this regard, the court has issued notices to former President Maithripala Sirisena, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and others who were named as its respondents to present their facts before the court.
After considering the basic facts regarding the petition, This order has been issued by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Justices S. Thurai Raja, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Achala Vengappuli.
The court has decided to hear this petition on September 23. This petition has been filed by Oshala Herath, a social activist.
The petitioner says that under the 19th Amendment of the Constitution, the decision of former President Maithripala Sirisena to remove Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa to that position is completely against the law.
