Maharagama Sita Atanna, who was shot at while taking the procession to Mahianganaya Rajamaha Temple, was hit by seven bullets, said Dr. Ashoka Dangolla, a senior professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Peradeniya University, who is treating the elephant. He added that the bullets are believed to be near the heart.

This elephant, which was brought to participate in the Mahiyangana Perahara, was shot by an officer of the Civil Defense Department attached to the Wildlife Department on the last 30th while it was tied at a place near the Mahaweli River in the Mahiyangana Viharastha premises. It is because of the misunderstanding that it is a wild elephant

It is reported that Sita Hastia is suffering from difficulty in walking even after getting food.
