No-confidence motion against the Prime Minister due to Chichi’s satellite

Social media reports indicate that discussions are underway to remove Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya from office. If necessary, there is a plan to bring a no-confidence motion, and political sources say that preliminary discussions will begin between the government and opposition parties on this matter.

However, the sources say that a majority of opposition members are likely to support the Prime Minister, and if a no-confidence motion is brought forward, the majority of the opposition will vote against it.

It is reported that a large number of National People’s Power MPs are loyal to the Prime Minister, and that the government has not yet confirmed any information in this regard.

This crisis situation has arisen due to a recent statement made by the Prime Minister regarding the ‘SupremeSAT’ satellite launched in 2012. With that statement, the JVP MPs representing the National People’s Power Government are spreading the opinion that the Prime Minister should resign.

She stated in Parliament, citing a Board of Investment report, that Sri Lanka has not invested any money in launching the satellite in question and has earned income through that satellite. With that statement, the government’s statement that Yoshitha Rajapaksa had launched a satellite by wasting government money collapsed, and the Prime Minister’s statement received a strong response from the opposition platforms.

Responding to that, Minister Wasatha Samarasinghe said that the Prime Minister’s statement contained incorrect information. He further stated that the Supreme Sat satellite was not in orbit.

The following day, Supreme Sat issued a statement saying that the satellite it had launched was still in its intended location. The company expressed its concern that its name was being used for political purposes by parties who were not familiar with the technical details.
