Hon. Minister of Labor and Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Sri Lanka, Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, participated in the South Asia Labor Mobility Conference held on May 20-21, 2025, in Thimphu, Bhutan.
Organized by the World Bank’s Social Protection and Labor (SPL) South Asia, SPL Global Unit, and the South Asia Office of the Chief Economist, in collaboration with the Royal Government of Bhutan, this high-level event brought together around 100 global delegates including government ministers, senior officials from international and regional organizations, and C-suite leaders from the private sector.
The conference served as a strategic platform to exchange best practices in migration governance and identify opportunities to expand net gains from labor mobility. Dr. Fernando attended Session 2: Support to Prospective Migrants, which focused on innovative policies, tools, and support systems to enhance the safety, readiness, and economic outcomes for prospective migrant workers.
His participation reinforced Sri Lanka’s commitment to fostering safe, orderly, and beneficial labour migration, while strengthening bilateral and multilateral collaboration in the region.
