Middle East heats up. US could be drawn into Israel-Iran war

US President Donald Trump is considering joining Israel in a war against Iran. He held a nearly 90-minute meeting with his national security team on Tuesday.

One target the US could strike is Iran’s Fordow nuclear power plant. It is located deep underground and only the Americans have a 30,000-pound bomb that could destroy it, BBC defence correspondent Frank Gardner said.

Trump’s advisers are divided on the move. Experts say US involvement would “completely change the course of the conflict.”

At least 30 US military aircraft have been flown to Europe in the past three days, including fighter jets and bombers, as well as tanker aircraft used to refuel US aircraft.

At least 30 US military aircraft have been flown to Europe from US bases in the past three days, including fighter jets and bombers, as well as tanker aircraft used to refuel US aircraft.

At least seven of these – KC-135s – are stationed at US air bases in Spain, Scotland and England, according to Flightradar24.

Israel and Iran have been at loggerheads since Israel launched an operation against Iran on Friday, saying it was aimed at destroying Tehran’s nuclear programme. The planes have been sent from the US to Europe as the attacks continue.

It is not yet clear whether the US move is directly related to the conflict or a precautionary measure.

But one expert said the deployment of tanker aircraft was “highly unusual”.
