W. M. Mendis & Company’s manufacturing facility in Nagoda, Welisara was sealed today (5).
The Commissioner General of Excise had ordered the suspension of Mendis Company’s liquor manufacturing license from today (05) in accordance with the legal provisions of the Excise Ordinance due to its failure to pay the excise duty due and the 3% surcharge amounting to Rs. 5.7 billion.
In accordance with that order, a group of Ja-Ela and Gampaha Excise Superintendents and officers of the Excise Department carried out the sealing.
The government had taken a policy decision to suspend the licenses of liquor manufacturing companies that have defaulted on payment of arrears of tax from November 30.
In such a backdrop, W.M. The Court of Appeal yesterday (4) ruled to dismiss without hearing a petition filed by Mendis and Company seeking a ruling to invalidate the letter issued by the Excise Department informing them that steps will be taken to suspend the liquor production licenses issued to them.
