McDonald’s, which ceased operations in Sri Lanka in March 2024 due to hygiene issues, announced yesterday that it has formally terminated its agreement with its Sri Lankan owner.
International Restaurant Systems (Pvt) Ltd acted as the local representative of McDonald’s Corporation. McDonald’s has not yet made an official statement whether it will start operations in Sri Lanka with another local company in the future.
In March, all 12 McDonald’s stores across Sri Lanka were closed due to poor sanitation at the local company, which is affiliated to the Abance Group.
McDonald’s is a huge chain of restaurants that runs about 40000 branches in 100 countries of the world. Such an institution leaving Sri Lanka on the basis of sanitary issues will have an impact even on the tourism industry in the country.
