Due to the rainfall of more than 50 mm in several river basins in the past 24 hours, the water level in some rivers has increased, but it is not expected to reach flood levels, Irrigation Director (Hydrology and Disaster Management) Engineer L.S. Suriyabandara said this morning (12).
Particularly in the upper areas of the Gin Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Kelani Ganga, Yan Oya basins, as well as in some places in the Batticaloa district, nearly 50 mm of rain has fallen.
Due to this situation, nearly 34 major reservoirs are still overflowing, he said.
The Irrigation Director further stated that the spill gates of the reservoirs of Deduru Oya, Rajanganaya, Nachchaduwa, Yan Oya, Padaviya, Lunugamvehera and Senanayake Samudraya will be opened to reduce the water level.
