The Legal Officers Association of the Attorney General’s Department has asserted that the Attorney General’s recent recommendation to release three suspects in a case has exercised their independent professional judgment in accordance with the respected traditions of the Attorney General’s Department.
Accordingly, the Association unequivocally states that it will not hesitate to defend the Attorney General against any attempt to remove him from office.
In this regard, a statement issued by the Association’s Acting Secretary Tashya Gajanayake stated:
“The Legal Officers Association of the Attorney General’s Department expresses its grave concern over certain recent factually incorrect and misleading statements circulating in the media regarding the instructions dated January 27, 2025 by the Honorable Attorney General.
The Association states that the relevant procedures and practices of the Attorney General’s Department have been strictly followed in matters relating to those instructions. The relevant officers had considered all the facts and the law and made appropriate recommendations for the release of the three suspects who were the subject of those instructions. The Hon. Attorney General, after considering the same, agreed with the recommendations and subsequently issued the relevant instructions.
It is the hallmark of an independent Attorney General’s Department to make decisions to indict and release suspects based on the available facts, without regard to political consequences or public approval or disapproval.
The Association expresses its utmost confidence in the Hon. Attorney General, his decisions and the officers involved in the relevant decision-making process, and affirms that they have exercised their independent professional judgment in accordance with the highest traditions of the Attorney General’s Department.
Accordingly, the Law Officers’ Association would like to emphatically state that they will not hesitate to rise up and defeat any attempt to remove the Hon. Attorney General from his post.
