Legal action was taken against 80 drivers for traffic offences during a surprise vehicle check conducted by the Nuwara Eliya Police Traffic Division and Nuwara Eliya Divisional Traffic Division, said Chief Inspector of Police Premalal Hettiarachchi of the Nuwara Eliya Headquarters Police.
Passenger buses, vans, three-wheelers, vans and buses transporting school students entering and leaving Nuwara Eliya have been inspected. Accordingly, a program to stop and inspect these vehicles at several locations in the Nuwara Eliya Police Area is being implemented.
Many vehicles have been identified that have been modified with additional parts that are different from the original model and that could cause accidents. The owners of those vehicles have been given 14 days to remove the additional parts installed in this way, and legal action will be taken against drivers who do not remove the dangerous parts within that period, said Police Inspector Y.M.P.K. Yapa, OIC of the Traffic Division of the Nuwara Eliya Police.
