Journalist Bhakthi Dharmapriya Mendis, who was receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a road accident, passed away this afternoon (3).
An alumnus of Richmond College, Galle, he joined journalism in 2000 as the inaugural editorial staff of the daily Lakbima newspaper. He later worked at Dinamina and Rivira newspapers and Hiru TV.
He was forty-seven years old at the time of his death and was the son of senior journalist Sugathapala Mendis. He is the husband of Himesha Dharmasena, a senior lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication Studies at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the father of Deema Thejaka Mendis, who is studying at Horizon College, Malabe.
The body has been kept at his residence in Mahagedara Watta, Boossa, Galle since Saturday (4) midnight. The last rites will be performed at the Dadalla Public Cemetery on Monday at 5 pm.
