International bans for four sports in Sri Lanka during the tenure of the current sports minister

The Secretary of the Cabinet has informed the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports in writing that if the interim committees are appointed by suspending the National Sports Associations, the approval of the Cabinet should be obtained in the future. Apart from that, the Cabinet Secretary has also informed the guidelines to be followed in such an occasion.

The Cabinet Secretary has also informed that if an interim committee is appointed, an impartial investigation should be done first and a report should be obtained, the attorney general should be consulted and the international federation concerned with the sports event where the interim committee is appointed should be informed.

The article further stated that these terms should be implemented until a new Sports Act is introduced in the future.

According to the powers of the existing National Sports Act, an interim committee can be set up by suspending a national sports association at the discretion of the sports minister, but the current international sports arena does not accept the interim board.

International bans have been imposed on Sri Lanka for karate, football, rugby and cricket due to the interim committees appointed during the current sports minister’s tenure.
