Deputy Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne says that vegetables are not included in the current compensation process. Accordingly, he says that in the future, all vegetable cultivations will be insured and compensation will be provided to farmers through that.
He further said that the circular issued for crop damage is expected to be revised in the future.
Meanwhile, the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board has informed the farmers to inform them about the crop damage caused by the heavy rains in the past few days before the end of today.
Officials have already started visiting the farmlands and estimating the damage, says Chairman of the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board Premasiri Jasinghaarachchi. The amount the government has so far allocated to provide compensation for the total crop damage is Rs. 1,000 million.
