Human Rights Commissioner Calls for Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, at the end of his visit to Sri Lanka, urged the government to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

At a press conference held yesterday (June 26), he stressed the need to release prisoners held for long periods under the PTA.

He further said that he hoped that the bill to decriminalize same-sex marriage would be passed soon. He also called for the repeal of the Security of Online Media Act.

Turk said that the resumption of investigations into the Easter attacks was a positive step and highlighted the importance of security and police reforms.
