History and aesthetics will not be touched – A promise from P.M

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says that some people are making false statements with political motives that the new education reforms will not include history and aesthetics subjects.

At a special meeting to inform provincial and regional officials about the new education reforms, the Prime Minister said that history and aesthetics subjects have not been removed from the curriculum.

The Ministry of Education has planned to implement a number of new education reforms, including reducing the number of periods in schools from eight to seven and increasing the duration of each period to 50 minutes from 2026.

Commenting on this, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said,

“We created this to show how a child can create without being confined to his field. One thing we definitely discussed at that time was that the two subjects of history and aesthetics are very important. Even for a child going to a stem subject, history and aesthetics have to be chosen. History and aesthetics are also mandatory for a child going to a management subject. History and aesthetics are also mandatory for a child going to a skills sector subject.

Unfortunately, without telling the whole story, they are trying to create a very false perception in society that history and aesthetics have been removed from the curriculum by leaving only the middle one. This is being deliberately sabotaged. It is very wrong. Let’s do politics. Don’t mix politics with education and children’s lives. We have not removed history and aesthetics from anywhere.”
