Heavy rains in many areas today

The low pressure area off the northern coast of Sri Lanka is expected to continue to develop and move westwards towards the northwest, the Meteorological Department said in a statement.

The situation is expected to develop into a depression off the coast of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh during the evening of today (22), the statement said.

Moderately strong winds of about 30-40 kmph are likely to occur at times in the western slopes of the central hills, the Western, Northern, North-Central, Northwestern and Southern provinces and the Trincomalee district.

The Department of Meteorology urges the public to take necessary measures to minimize the risks of temporary strong winds and lightning that may occur with thundershowers.
