Harsha de Silva points out the risk of vehicle imports.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Dr. Harsha de Silva states that vehicle imports are risky in the current economic structure. The MP said this while participating in the second reading debate of the budget today (18).

The MP, who further expressed his views there, said:

“The youth had a great desire to buy a Japanese bike.. Who said that you could buy a Vitz for 1.4 million.. I looked and the Toyota Raize is 1.22 million, the Yaris is 1.85 million, and the Prius is 2.89 million… A big mess has been created here.

Yesterday, the President said that the majority of this tax increase is through the import of motor vehicles. I looked into how. Taxes should increase by about 1.6% of the gross domestic product. About half of that comes from vehicle imports.

So vehicle imports are really risky. “Because who would buy vehicles for such prices? I don’t think there are people in Sri Lanka who are rich enough to buy such vehicles.”
