Harak Kata alias Nadun Chinthaka, who is said to be a member of an organized crime gang who participated in a case being heard before the Colombo High Court, told journalists that former Minister Tiran Alles and former IGP Deshabandhu Tennakoon demanded Rs. 300 million from him.
He was walking through the corridor of the court to attend the case being heard before the High Court and then when he came out of the court, he said this while leaving with his hands in handcuffs.
When the case was heard in the court, he also raised his hands and informed about the difficulties he was having in obtaining medical treatment. Accordingly, the court has also ordered that the suspect be produced before the Tangalle Judicial Medical Officer within a week.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed in court that the government is spending Rs. 10 million per month on the alleged drug trafficker Harak Kata alias Nadun Chinthaka, who is being held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
A case against Nadun Chinthaka Wickramaratne alias Harak Kata was taken up before Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Chathurika De Silva on the 9th. Attorneys Sanjaya Ariyadasa, Pubudu Randima and Udul Premaratne, who appeared for the suspect, submitted that the government has had to spend over Rs. 10 million per month on behalf of their client.
The lawyers presented evidence before the court, revealing that only this suspect is being held in the Tangalle Old Prison belonging to the Terrorism Investigation Division, and that 87 people, including 63 officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Terrorism Investigation Division and 24 soldiers from the Police Special Task Force, have been deployed for his security.
The lawyers appearing for the suspect informed the court that the prison, which houses only one suspect, receives a monthly water bill of one hundred thousand rupees and an electricity bill of sixty-five thousand rupees.
The lawyers presented evidence before the court, stating that more than one crore rupees have to be spent on this suspect alone, including food, drinks and salaries for the officers on duty.
The lawyers, who said that the suspect would be brought from Tangalle for cases to be heard before the Galle and Colombo courts, that four vehicles would arrive with security, and that the suspect would be provided with security by police stations along the way, asked why they were spending so much money on just one suspect.
Meanwhile, lawyer Udul Premaratne, who appeared for the suspect, further stated in court that the suspect would be given spoiled food, not given the opportunity to seek treatment for illnesses, and not given the opportunity to meet with lawyers.
