Government’s position on British sanctions against Karannagoda and Shavendra yet to be announced

Fleet Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda says he has not been informed of the Sri Lankan government’s official position on the sanctions imposed by the British government against three former army chiefs, including himself.
.
Responding to an inquiry by The Island newspaper, he says that he has not yet been informed of the recommendations of the ministerial subcommittee appointed to study the issue.

The committee consists of Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara and State Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara.

The Navy Commander-in-Chief emphasizes that the government should pay the highest attention to the insulting acts committed by various parties targeting the military officers who won the war. He also states that he is interested in knowing the recommendations submitted to the Cabinet by the relevant ministerial subcommittee and the future actions taken by the government.

Political commentators commenting on the current situation point out that the opposition has also been silent on this issue of national importance so far.

However, government media spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa had previously stated that this decision by Britain was unilateral and that the subcommittee was appointed to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
