Government to take final decision on land of North and East people

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says that the government has no intention of acquiring land of the people of the North and East.

She says that the government’s aim is to quickly transfer it to the people who have land rights.

She made this statement while participating in a discussion held in Parliament regarding resolving the land rights issues faced by the people of the North and East.

She also said that doubts have arisen among the people regarding the program carried out by the previous governments to resolve the land rights in the North and East so far.

It is said that the members of Parliament representing the North and East have pointed out that a systematic program that has won the trust of the people is needed for this since the people who have the rights do not have any documents to prove their rights.

They have pointed out that since some groups have acquired land fraudulently, the people have faith that the government will provide a fair solution to the relevant issue.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized that the government agrees that land ownership should be provided to the people with legal confirmations by introducing a proper methodology so that the doubts of the people are dispelled.

Accordingly, the Prime Minister has instructed officials to discuss with the people and relevant sectors and work to provide a proper solution in the future.
