A dialogue to draft a model constitution, adding a new experience to the constitution-making process in Sri Lanka, will be held at the Bandaranaike Conference Hall tomorrow (3).
The inaugural dialogue, which will begin with the participation of a panel of scholars, is scheduled to be attended by representatives of a number of opposition political parties and civil society organizations, including the ruling party.
Among the political leaders who have been invited to participate are Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena, Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Professor Deepika Udagama will deliver the keynote address at the dialogue. Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne, Dr. Kumar Vadivel Guruparan, former Member of Parliament, Attorney-at-Law Udaya Gammanpila, Member of Parliament, President’s Counsel Nisham Kariyapper, Dr. Ramesh Ramasamy are the other speakers. The program will be moderated by Dr. Kalana Senaratne of the University of Peradeniya.
This program, organized by the One Text Initiative, is scheduled to be completed. Accordingly, a model constitution is scheduled to be drafted by January 2027.
