The Colombo High Court has ordered that the case filed by the Bribery Commission against former Women’s Affairs Minister Chandrani Bandara under the charge of “rape” be heard on September 4.
The order was made when the case was heard before Colombo High Court Judge Sahan Mapa Bandara today (28).
President’s Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetti, who appeared for the accused Chandrani Bandara, presented evidence before the court, stating that the indictment could not be maintained and that he expected to file preliminary objections.
The officer appearing for the Bribery Commission stated that the documents related to the case would be handed over to the defense in court.
The judge then ordered that the case be heard on September 4 for the defense to file preliminary objections.
The Bribery Commission has filed 11 charges against the accused former minister under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The Bribery Commission filed these charges against the former minister, alleging that she committed the offence of “corruption” by appointing one H.M. Chandrawansa as the Project Director of the Ministry of Dry Zone Development without following the proper procedure and by influencing officials, including the Secretary of the Ministry, to appoint a group of her friends to various positions in an illegal manner, between January 14, 2019 and January 31, 2019.
