A serious accident occurred when a tree fell on a bus traveling from Colombo to Deniya near Kollupitiya Liberty Roundabout. Colombo National Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Rukshan Bellana says that five people died in the accident. More than 17 people have been hospitalized.
Several such accidents have happened in the past due to lack of proper maintenance of the plants grown for urban decoration. However, experts point out that such plants should be maintained with proper supervision and their condition should be considered and removed in necessary cases. They also point out that such accidents are also likely to occur due to unnecessary handling of concrete and interlocks, damage to plant roots and lack of proper nutrition.
