The bus belonging to the Kataragama depot that fell into a 100-foot ravine, killing 22 people, was restarted and driven at the Kotmale police station today. The bus was restarted and driven by a committee headed by an Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector appointed by the Motor Transport Commissioner to investigate the accident.
Officers from the Engineering Division of the Kataragama depot also joined the event and the bus was restarted and driven in their presence.
The bus had previously been inspected by the Nuwara Eliya Chief Motor Vehicle Inspector Jaliya Bandra, Government Analyst and the five member committy appointed by the Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya.
After the inspection, the head of the committee appointed by the Motor Transport Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner (Technical) Anura Baddegama, briefed journalists. He said that since this was a judicial matter, it was not appropriate to share his findings or observations with the media or social media.
Accordingly, he stated that he would submit a report with his final findings to the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate, the Motor Transport Commissioner and the police in the future.
