Excise duty payment period changes

A new gazette notification has been issued amending the existing laws for the payment period and levy of taxes on the production of alcohol. This gazette notification has been issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the Minister of Financial Planning and Economic Development with effect from today (28).

The gazette notification states that every licensee must pay tax on or before the due date under Section 22 of the Excise Ordinance. The notification states that action will be taken to suspend the liquor bottling license of licensees who fail to pay the tax or fee in full within 30 days from the due date.

Also, the new gazette has authorized the suspension of all licenses related to the production of liquor of that licensee if the tax and fee payable have not been paid in full for a period exceeding three months (90 days) from the due date.

Previously, the period of suspension of licenses was up to 6 months, and steps have been taken to shorten it to 3 months through the new gazette.
