The government has reportedly taken steps to temporarily suspend the operation of Elon Musk’s ‘Starlink’ satellite internet service in Sri Lanka.
This ban is scheduled to be implemented until the right to protect communication information, including for national security, is ensured for state institutions or data.
The government also believes that there may be opportunities for some individuals to use this satellite internet service for illegal activities. In this regard, the Ministry of Defense and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission are in further discussions with Starlink.
Starlink was granted the necessary license to provide internet services in the country during the previous government. A new parliamentary bill has also been passed in this regard.
