The appointment of the members of the UNP who contested and won the Colombo Municipal Council in this year’s local government election has become problematic. Accordingly, sources in the party report that the appointment of those members will be delayed
This situation, which has arisen due to an internal problem in the UNP, is benefiting the National People’s power. The reason for this is that the thirteen seats that the UNP holds are extremely crucial for establishing power for the opposition in the Colombo Municipal Council, where no one has won a majority at present.
There are a total of 117 member seats in the Colombo Municipal Council. Of these, 60 seats must be won to gain power in the council.
In this election, the National People’s Force only won 48 seats. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has won 29 seats and the United National Party has won 13 seats.
In addition, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna has won 05 seats, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has won 04 seats, the Independent Group No. 03 has won 03 seats and the Sarva Jana Balaya Party has won 02 seats, while Independent Groups No. 04 and No. 05 have won 02 seats each.
In addition, the National Freedom Front, the Podujana Peramuna, the Democratic National Alliance, the National People’s Front, the United Republic Front as well as the Independent Groups have won 01 and 02 seats each.
