The low pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression at around 05.30 this morning (25), the Meteorological Department said.
The depression, which has developed, was located about 900 km northeast of Batticaloa at 10.9 north latitude and 89.0 east longitude, the Meteorological Department said in a statement.
The system is expected to move westwards and northwestwards, intensify into a deep depression and a cyclonic storm on the 26th and then move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast within the next 48 hours, the department said.
Due to this, the Meteorological Department has requested the relevant parties to refrain from fishing and navigational activities in the sea areas between 05 and 15 north latitudes and 80-95 east longitudes until further notice.
The statement issued by the Meteorological Department further states that fishing and navigational activities in the shallow sea areas off the coast from Kankesanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee are to be avoided until further notice.
