Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amasuriya said in Parliament yesterday that it is not appropriate to use the incident of a schoolgirl committing suicide in Kotahena to insult the government or the minister.
The Prime Minister stated that everyone accepts that a mistake has been made, and that even if the child is not there, there is a mother, father and another daughter in the family and they should all be thought of.
She stated that taking the decision to take the girl’s life is a failure on our part as a society, and we are all responsible for it and we must take steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
The Prime Minister stated that she has also asked the principals of the school in question for an apology regarding this incident.
She further stated that discussions are currently underway to prepare a mechanism involving the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, the Ministry of Education, the National Child Protection Authority and the police.
