The government has decided to take a final decision on all the large-scale projects to be implemented with India after the next Parliament meeting. The new government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has decided to review the facts regarding the electricity project implemented by the Adani company in the northern region as promised during the election period.
During former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to India last year, the two countries agreed on a document on electricity and energy, trade, economic and financial affairs.
Accordingly, the two sides agreed to enter into the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the development of renewable energy and to establish a high-capacity power grid interconnection between India and Sri Lanka to enable bilateral electricity trade. Another connectivity project is the construction of a multi-product petroleum pipeline from southern India to Sri Lanka.
India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka on Friday to work with the new government, confirming India’s interest in ensuring that the work of all these projects and other related investments do not undergo changes in the event of a regime change in Sri Lanka.
However, sources close to the government say that a review is underway to assess all connectivity projects and their current status.
