The Colombo High Court today (6) sentenced a couple to death for torturing and killing a two-year-old child they had adopted.
Colombo High Court Judge Sujeewa Nissanka delivered this verdict after a lengthy trial.
A couple from Maligawatte were found guilty of murder.
The Attorney General had filed a case against the two defendants for torturing and killing a two-year-old boy they had adopted on or around May 11, 2018, in Maligawatte.
After a lengthy trial, Judge Sujeewa Nissanka, who delivered the verdict, stated that the prosecution had proven the charges of murder against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge, who delivered the verdict, further stated that police evidence revealed that the police had gone to the relevant house and conducted investigations based on information received that the body of a two-year-old boy who had died suspiciously was about to be buried without an autopsy.
Accordingly, the police officers who went to the relevant place had become suspicious and reported the facts to the Magistrate and took steps to conduct a post-mortem examination into the child’s death.
Accordingly, the judge said that the medical evidence revealed that the child had been severely tortured in the forensic medical report submitted to the court.
Around 90 injuries were observed on the child’s body, and medical evidence has concluded that they were burns and injuries caused by assault.
