Political sources say that the leader of the National Freedom Front, Wimal Weerawansa, hopes that the group of parliamentarians who have left the Podujana Peramuna and are working with the opposition will present themselves as the common opposition candidate in the next presidential election.
It was previously announced that Dallas Alahapperuma would contest the presidency representing that group of MPs. However, with MP Wimal Weerawansa expressing his willingness to run for it, the sources further say that there has been a division among those MPs.
According to the report, this group of councillors is holding discussions on this matter these days, but because both Vimal and Dallas are vying for candidacy, the discussions have ended without a solution.
Meanwhile, Samagi Jana Balawega has already named Sajith Premadasa as its presidential candidate. Therefore, whichever of the two, Dallas Alahapperuma or Wimal Weerawansa, comes forward, they will not be a common candidate of the opposition, a SJB spokesperson told our Web site.
