During the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Economy and Physical Planning, Sri Lanka Customs officials expressed that due to the imposed restrictions on the import of goods, including the suspension of vehicle imports, the expected income from Sri Lanka Customs for this year’s budget will not be achieved.
Member of Parliament Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated that the projected income for Sri Lanka Customs in this year’s budget is 1226 billion rupees, whereas the actual income for the first five months of the year amounted to only 330 billion rupees.
He made these remarks during a recent meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Economy and Physical Planning held in Parliament.
The customs officials who addressed the committee stated that, based on their projections, the customs revenue for this year will amount to 783 billion rupees. They highlighted that the ban on vehicle imports and the existing restrictions on the import of goods are the primary reasons for this situation.
