Current status of the low pressure area.

The Department of Meteorology has stated in a statement that the low pressure area in the Gulf of Mannar is currently weakening and accordingly the impact of this system on the weather in the island is decreasing.

However, the statement further states that due to the operation of this system, several showers may occur in the Northern – North Central, Uva and Eastern provinces. In addition, there is a possibility of a few showers in the North-Western and Central provinces.

In other areas, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the evening or night, and foggy conditions may prevail at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts during the early morning hours, the Department of Meteorology states.

The warning issued in the deep and shallow sea areas from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar and Kankesanthurai has been lifted.

Winds in the sea areas around the island will be from the east to the northeast and the wind speed will be between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour.

The wind speed in the sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar may increase to about 50-55 kilometers per hour at times, the statement issued by the Meteorological Department further states.
